Content Delivery Network
CloudFlare runs 69 data centers strategically located around the world. When you activate CloudFlare on your Self Hosted account, the content delivery network will begin routing your traffic to the nearest datacenter. By automatically moving the static parts of your site closer to your visitors, the overall performance of your site improves significantly.

Security
CloudFlare’s security protections offer a broad range of protections against attacks such as DDoS, hacking or spam submitted to a blog or comment form. What is powerful about CloudFlare’s approach is that the system gets smarter the more sites that are part of the its community. CloudFlare analyzes the traffic patterns of hundreds of millions of visitors in real time and adapts the security systems to ensure good traffic gets through and bad traffic is stopped.

Railgun
CloudFlare’s Railgun technology greatly speeds up the delivery of non-cached pages. While CloudFlare automatically caches about 65% of the resources needed to make up a page, 35% can’t be cached because the resources are dynamically generated or marked as ’do not cache’. That 35% is often the initial HTML of the page that must be downloaded first. CloudFlare Railgun speeds up this remaining 35%. Websites using Railgun show a 143% improvement in HTML load times and a 90% decrease in time to first byte (TTFB) responses.
